A quest is a task given to a role player character that yields a reward when completed. Virtually quests are given by an NPC (non-actor character). Even so, some quests can come from right-clicking signs (usually the wanted poster type), reading scrolls or documents, opening containers, using sure looted items (which will say "Begins a quest" on the tooltip when moused over), or from completing a previous quest (chain quest). Until you reach the maximum level, a quest will also reward you lot with Experience Points (XP). After that, you will receive gold instead. Most quests will too reward you with reputation from the same faction as the NPC quest giver.

The Quests category has articles on many specific quests. This list may not be as comprehensive every bit database sites like Allakhazam, Thottbot, or Wowhead, but the wiki quest articles accept the advantage of being a summary of information on a quest, as opposed to a long list of sometimes conflicting or erstwhile comments added to the raw quest data.

New quests can be added to WoWWiki by reading Creating a quest commodity, using the Quest Boilerplate to record the details and adding categories for the starting zone, obtainable at level (e.g. Quests at xviii) and other categories every bit appropriate. Then update the main zone quest guide page, and any pages for the quest giver or starting particular.

There are currently more than 9,500 quests in Earth of Warcraft.[ane] The initial pattern had only 100 horde quests, 100 alliance quests and 100 neutral quests planned for the whole game.[2]

For a complete listing of quests bachelor, encounter the Category:Quests by level page.

Starting out

Quest point.png

Encounter besides: List of quest areas

Depending on your race you will start in a different geographical region with some common quests and some race/class-specific quests with several depression-level creatures around and a limited number of NPCs. Many of the quests in World of Warcraft are single-step, but there will often exist multiple followup quests that turn into a long quest series.

Many NPCs can offer you lot more than one quest; when talking to them, you'll get a window giving you lot the pick to select which quest you wish to talk to them about, using the same symbols as appear over their heads. To detect out the quest or the condition of an uncompleted quest, talk to the NPC with a quest condition indicator. Occasionally as you gamble in Azeroth, y'all may encounter dropped or fixed items that will give out quests when activated (right-clicked).

Try to get and finish all the quests in a given geographic locale before moving on to a college-level expanse with new quests. The reason for this is that other quests may send y'all in unlike directions and into other map areas. By the time yous get back to the original quest track, the quests take gone gray. They can still be accomplished, but any items received will be below your current level, the XP volition be much less helpful, and the cash, if any, volition be small modify compared to the amounts you lot are currently bringing in from looting and selling vendor trash items. All the same, if it is a member of a long quest chain, it may be worth completing greyness quests, because afterward ones may exist for your level or even for above your level.

Identifying quest givers

Quest givers appear on the mini-map

Quest complete plow-in appears on the mini-map

Encounter too: Category:Quest givers

Along with the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expansion, NPCs who offer quests will have their names floating in a higher place their head (green for quest givers of the same faction and yellow for quest givers who will give quests to either faction or are not yet friendly. If a quest offered is besides low level to provide meaningful rewards or experience, the indicator (described beneath) will not announced (unless requested specifically), only the name will be colored.

You tin can identify quest giving NPCs from indicators over their heads:

As well equally of patch two.3, you can identify quest givers past the pointer change when y'all move it over them:

Pointer quest on 32x32.png interact with quest giver Pointer quest off 32x32.png quest giver out of range

Also as of patch 2.3.ii, you tin identify quest enders (completed quest) by the pointer change when you motion it over them:

Pointer questdone on 32x32.png collaborate with quest ender Pointer questdone off 32x32.png quest ender out of range

If you accept completed a quest just y'all might not want to plow it in nonetheless (because your bags are full, for instance), you lot can return to information technology later at whatsoever time. However, until you turn information technology in, the quest ender will comtinue to brandish a gold question mark (Quest Complete 16x16.png), and so you will not know if they have a new quest for you until you turn it the completed quest or speak to them as if to turn it in.

Auto have quests

Since World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Calamity, some quests do not technically have quest givers or you won't need to find the quest giver to get the quest. These are called Auto Accept quests. The histrion volition be notified a quest is bachelor with a popup message at the upper right of the screen with a brief intro well-nigh the quest.

These quests are triggered by various factors such equally entering a subzone, killing a type of mob, or reaching a certain level.

Depression level quests

If a quest is considered too low level for your character (if information technology will accept a gray color in your log), it will exist much less visible. By default, an exclamation bespeak (Quest Avail 16x16.png) will not announced above the quest giver'southward caput, nor volition i announced on the minimap without an extra step (see below). Since Patch two.3, the quest championship in the quest giver's talk window will too be tagged "(Depression Level)".

Before Patch 3.0.two, a low-level quest could exist discovered merely by mousing over (or interacting with) its quest giver. Since three.0.two, selecting "Low Level Quests" on the minimap radar will display exclamation points ( Legion low level quest marker.png ) for every available quest, including those considered "depression level". This also causes a dull exclamation point to announced over NPCs offering depression-level quests.

Quest types

Icon-time.svg This section concerns content that is out-of-date. Reason: Needs World of Warcraft: Legion Legion.

In Globe of Warcraft, quests are separated into several broad categories:

Solo quests

About quests are intended to be completed by a single role player, only depending on the quest, unlike classes may take differing levels of difficulty completing quests.

Group quests

In the quest text a group quest will have a recommended number of players to consummate this blazon of quest. These number estimates are bourgeois and depending on class and skill, some 2 role player quests tin be easily soloed while others may be slightly hard with given number of players. Many quests recommending iii-4 players can exist done with 2 players.

Previously called an "elite" quest.

Dungeon quests

Requires an objective within an instance. Other than that they tin be similar to solo and group quests.

Raid quests

Requires an objective inside a raid instance or involving an outdoor raid boss. Too the Heroic quests, these are the hardest types of quests to complete for players of the recommended level range.

Heroic quests

For non-raiders, these are the hardest quests as they require completion inside a Heroic fashion, non-raid instance. These are the hardest types of non-raid quests to complete for players of the recommended level range. These quests can also exist a variant of a daily quest which tends to be slightly easier.

PvP quests

These quests crave players complete them while flagged for PvP and ordinarily in a PvP battleground or zone. These quests can also be a variant of a daily quest which may be tied to a specific battleground or can be very wearisome and frequently are ignored by PvP oriented players.

Repeatable quests

Main article: Repeatable reputation quest

Most quests are of the standard type (Quest Avail 16x16.png). Nevertheless, some can be repeated indefinitely (or at least until some maximum is hit) and tin be identified by the blue RRQ Avail 16x16.png or RRQ Complete 16x16.png over the head of the quest giver whether or not you accept the requisite items. The symbol remains a blue RRQ Complete 16x16.png after you turn it in again. Such repeatable quests are quite often begun by a normal quest, and in one case y'all've completed that quest information technology appears as is described.

Most repeatable quests are repeatable reputation quests (RRQs) for increasing your reputation with a particular faction. See the What are the Repeatable Reputation Quests department of the Reputation page for a listing. Contrary to the type of quest described simply above, for instance, the Timbermaw furbolgs of Felwood and Winterspring want you to prove to them that y'all're on their side. In this case, each fourth dimension you turn in the quest, rather than having a blue question marking, you get a familiar gilt exclamation point.

The Darkmoon Faire has special repeatable quests that both increase reputation and allow you to collect tickets for rewards.

Technically these quests cannot be done indefinitely, since they finish appearing if a reputation maximum is reached.

Daily quests

Run into also: Daily quest or Category:Daily quests

Daily quests are a sub-type of repeatable quests that you may simply exercise one time per 24 hours. The exact reset hour depends on the realm, just it never changes, is called to be in the early on AM, and will not coincide with the instance reset. Each character has a limit of 25 quests of this type they can do a day.

Daily quests come in normal, cooking, fishing, heroic, and PvP subtypes.

Another limitation is that you lot may perform only 25 of this variety of quest per day. This may force you to choose among those daily quests available to you. The number of daily quests y'all have washed this day is listed in the upper right-manus corner of your quest log. In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Burning Crusade most quests of this type announced with the standard marker (Quest Avail 16x16.png), regardless of how often you do them, simply in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Wrath of the Lich King several quest announced with the RRQ marker (RRQ Avail 16x16.png) that count confronting your daily quest limit.

Seasonal quests

Run across also: Result or Category:Events
Master article: Event

Seasonal quests are available during short time (from one twenty-four hours to ii weeks) at special fourth dimension of year. They can exist both normal and daily; some normal quests can be repeatable during the next flavour.

Quest variations

See as well: Category:Escort quests

Most standard quest tasks take 1 of the following forms with a variety of quest objectives:

  • Gather a number of items and return them to the quest giver or another NPC.
  • Kill a number of creatures and render to the quest giver or some other NPC.
  • Deliver an item (usually a alphabetic character or a package) or some items from the quest giver to another NPC.
  • Kill a number of creatures, boodle a single quest detail or several quest items from them, and return with the quest item(s) to the quest giver or another NPC.
  • Utilize a profession to acquire or make a single or several items and render with the particular(s) to the quest giver or another NPC.
  • Escort an NPC from ane identify to some other, normally through a dangerous area.
    • Many quests that involve escorting an NPC through an surface area full of mobs can be quite difficult to do solitary. "The Defias Traitor" quest in Westfall is one such example, as is the Forsaken quest in Silverpine Forest "Escorting Erland." The NPCs of those quests are suicidal hotshots who engage each enemy within a 10-yard radius despite your directive to keep them alive, leaving you lot to relieve them from themselves besides as all the other mobs attempting to eat both of you. In addition, many escort quests have scripted events where a number of enemies will spawn correct in front of you, forcing yous to fight them at once. Failing these quests occurs unremarkably, but y'all tin easily abandon it and outset over. Or, in some cases, if you find yourself overwhelmed during quests like these, abandon the quest and run abroad as far equally you can, and endeavor information technology again when you are at a higher level or take some backup coming with you lot. "The Defias Traitor" is notorious every bit a favored target for Horde attacks, which simply extends the duration of the quest (and, in some cases, necessitates a complete restart of the quest).
    • Some players detect Escort quests extremely annoying due to the fact that the NPC almost e'er walks, regardless of the reason for the escort (fifty-fifty when y'all are escorting an NPC during an escape, they just run if they are moving to attack something).
    • When soloing escort quests, a useful tactic is to stay slightly ahead of the NPC, so that you can tank with any enemies that endeavour to ambush your escort. This tactic is much more effective if the escort quest is at a much lower level than your character.
  • Detect and speak to an NPC, which usually leads to a subsequent quest. When such quests are designed to accept the sole purpose of leading a actor from one zone to another, they are known as Bread Crumb Quests [3]
  • Build and/or maintain a level of reputation with a specific faction.
  • Notice a container item, loot an detail in it that gives you a follow-up quest.
  • Explore a detail region or area and return to the quest giver or some other NPC.

NOTE: Some quests have a time limit, which is counted down in a clock that appears under the mini-map.

Quest rewards

Meet also: Reputation

Most rewards have the course of items, money and reputation, but some quests (especially form-specific ones) give abilities or spells. Some of the more desirable reward items include uncommon quality or better items or recipes for use with professions. All quests tend to include XP as part of the reward, although some repeatable reputation quests practise not advantage XP.

Boosted notes:

  • Many quests allow y'all to choose among advantage items.
  • Nearly reward items will be bind on pickup, also known every bit Soulbound.
  • The completion of quests will also impact your reputation with particular factions, which tin accept further benign effects such as cheaper prices at vendors and access to special vendors such equally mounts.
  • Some reward items may not be usable by your graphic symbol (ordinarily based on class).

Managing a quest log

Currently active quests are listed with their status and details in the Quest Log (50 key). Quests can also be shared with other party members. A player can be in the process of completing (or completed but not turned in) upward to 25 quests at any 1 fourth dimension. A warning will sound and a pocket-size message appears if you try to accept a quest when you lot already accept 25 quests.

Sharing quests

To share a quest, open the Quest Log, select a quest and click Share Quest at the lesser of the window. Each fellow member of the party who is in the vicinity volition exist prompted whether they want to join the quest. Once you've tried to share a quest, the following things may happen:

  • If the party member is eligible for a quest, a yellow organisation bulletin volition appear stating you are sharing the quest with the grapheme. The receiving graphic symbol will get a quest window every bit if they were receiving a quest from an NPC.
  • If the party member accepts the quest, a yellow system bulletin will announced stating the graphic symbol accepted the quest.
  • If the party member is non eligible to begin a quest, a xanthous system message will appear stating the character is not eligible. This can happen if the party member is, for example, of the wrong class (if the quest is class-specific) or is of insufficient level. It can also happen if the grapheme has not completed the quest'southward prerequisite quest(due south), if any, or does not have the special item that starts the quest.
  • If the party member already has the quest, has already completed the quest, or has a full quest log, a yellow system message will appear stating this.
  • Equally of Patch 3.0.3, there is no longer a brake on altitude for sharing quests.

Some quests will not be sharable, since they utilize only to the player who accustomed the quest. If the pick to accept the quest is non given to a party member, they will non receive credit for having helped consummate it. If accepting the quest gives an item which is required to do the quest, the quest is usually not shareable.

Abandoning quests

Quests can be abandoned with no penalty by clicking Abandon Quest in the Quest Log, except that the histrion must find the quest giver again to pickup the quest again. The Cancel button in the Quest Log merely closes the window and does not touch on whatever selected quests. There volition exist a warning that the special quest items already obtained (if there are any) will exist destroyed when the quest abased. This does non include normal, non-quest items needed for some quests.

"Kill Ten of Y" quests

Whatsoever quests that require you to impale "X" amount of something will take you restart at 0 killed if/when you option upwardly the quest once more. This will affect all kill counters for any single quest, regardless of the number of dissimilar items needed to kill.

"Collect X of Y" quests

If the items you are collecting are marked as Quest particular you will lose those items when you abandon the related quest. Items, such as trade goods, which are non quest items volition non exist lost. Quests that accept yous collect "Ten" amount of something though volition be updated to prove the current amount yous have collected (on person or in bank) if/when you pick upwards the quest again.

The quests that are most easily abandoned are the ones that come from drops that you have plant. This way you tin just reactivate the item and become the quest right back. Too, other skilful quests to drib (in instance you need to) are the ones you get from NPCs in the surface area of your Hearthstone-jump inn. This manner you don't accept to travel far to re-obtain them. It could exist inconvenient, still, if you suddenly decide to do a quest that you get from at that place, yet you have to travel quite some distance to make it at where you complete the quest. Information technology can be very difficult to juggle quests. It would be helpful to write downwards what quests you've seen, where to get them, and where they're completed, and where you turn them in, and then yous tin can practice several quests at once in one area.
